Dental Sealants
Dental sealants are the most cost effective means of preventing tooth decay
The tiny grooves on the chewing surfaces of molars are called pits and fissures. These grooves are deep and narrow making them a challenging area to keep clean with your toothbrush. These pits and fissures are one of the most common areas to experience cavities and therefore a thin plastic or acrylic like coating called sealants is applied to the grooves to help prevent them from decay by keeping the germs and food particles out. It is best to place sealants on children soon after they have had a new permanent molar erupt into place, first molars usually erupting in around the age of 6 and second molars appearing around the age of 12. Sealants are a great treatment option to protect those molars from vulnerable decay, they are typically clear or white in colour so they are minimally visible and the process is short and easy and does not require drilling or removing any tooth structure. Sealants can last up to 5-10 years, but should be checked at your dental hygiene visits to make sure they are still in place.
